There is serious verse for children but "funny" is the most popular and the most fun to write. Ideas for kid's poetry -- are everywhere. Remember the birthday party with the rubbish magician? You can learn to recognise what will make a good nonsense poem. That woman showing off her big gold ear-rings.
What if those beautiful ear-rings turned into insects . . .
Have you noticed, my dear -
you've a flea in your ear?
Just
look around at where you are now. Think of the things you can see in an unusual
way, give machines feelings. I think of my computer as one of my
best friends, but maybe that's not the way it sees me . . .
My PC got angry
and threatened to fight me,
it's training its mouse
to jump up and byte me.
Squeezing a few computer terms into the poem
helps make it funnier.
With practice you can train yourself to look and listen and twist what
you see and hear around in your mind. Dreams can be a wonderful source
of poetry as they're often strange anyway.
I sailed through chocolate oceans,
on a boat of cherry cake.
I landed on a jelly hill
beside an ice cream lake.
So when I heard my mother call
"Wake up, and downstairs quick!
It's time to eat your breakfast."
I was feeling pretty sick.
Listen
to the poet inside of you. If you want to eat a bar of chocolate that's not a
poem, everyone likes chocolate. But what if the chocolate bar wants to eat
you? That's poetry for kids!
